In this evocative and intricately designed print, the enigmatic figure of Jan Hus, a pivotal figure in Bohemian religious history, is depicted in profile against an ornate oval border. Hus, born around 1372, was a prominent theologian, philosopher, and rector at Charles University in Prague. He is best known for his reformist ideas that challenged the established Catholic Church, advocating for a return to the Bible's original teachings and the direct communication between God and the laity. Despite his denials of heresy and assurances of loyalty to the Church, Hus was summoned to the Council of Constance in 1415 to answer for his beliefs. The council, however, was not swayed by his arguments and, on July 6, 1415, Hus was condemned as a heretic and sentenced to be burnt at the stake. The image of Hus in this print captures the intensity and conviction in his gaze, his long beard flowing down his chest, and the cherubs at the corners of the border symbolizing the divine and the eternal.
