This evocative photograph captures the stern yet resolute visage of General Sir Henry de Beauvoir de Lisle, a prominent British Army officer who played a significant role in the First World War. Born on October 18, 1864, in County Armagh, Ireland, de Lisle joined the British Army in 1883 and rose through the ranks to become a respected and accomplished military leader. During the First World War, de Lisle served as the General Officer Commanding of the 21st Army Corps and later the 1st Cavalry Division. He was instrumental in the planning and execution of several key military operations, including the Battle of Loos and the Battle of Arras. His leadership and strategic acumen earned him the respect and admiration of his troops and his superiors. After the war, de Lisle continued to serve in the British Army, holding various high-ranking positions. He retired from the military in 1931.
