EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the bravery and heroism of Sergeant Patrick Mullane during the Battle of Maiwand in 1880. The battle took place on July 27, in the Afghanistan campaign, and saw the British Army clash with the Afghan forces near the Helmand River. At the forefront of the photograph is Sergeant Mullane, a member of the 66th Regiment of the British Army, as he selflessly rescues a wounded gun-carriage driver from the battlefield. The driver, whose identity remains unknown, lies prone next to the overturned gun-carriage, while Mullane bravely shields him from the ongoing conflict. The Battle of Maiwand was a significant event in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, with the British suffering heavy losses. Despite the danger, Mullane's actions demonstrate the unwavering courage and commitment of the soldiers involved. His heroism did not go unnoticed, and he was later awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest decoration for valour in the face of the enemy, for his actions during the battle. The photograph, taken by an unknown photographer, is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during this pivotal moment in history. The image captures the raw emotion and intensity of the battlefield, with the dusty terrain, overturned gun-carriage, and the determined expression on Mullane's face all contributing to a powerful and evocative image. This photograph is an important historical document, providing a glimpse into the past and the events that shaped the world we live in today. It serves as a testament to the bravery and heroism of Sergeant Patrick Mullane and the soldiers who fought in the Battle of Maiwand.
