By the time she took on the travesti role of Madelon in George Colman's The Surrender of Calais in 1792, she had already established a successful career in London's theatrical scene. The Surrender of Calais was a historical play that recounted the events leading up to the English surrender of the city to the French during the Seven Years' War. In the production, Bland portrayed Madelon, a character who disguised herself as a man to infiltrate the enemy camp and gather intelligence. The travesti role, which required Bland to cross-dress and perform as a man, was a daring and innovative choice for a female actor of the time. Bland's portrayal of Madelon was a critical and commercial success. Her vocal abilities as a singer were also showcased in the production, adding an extra layer of depth to her performance.
