The fort, located in present-day KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, was under the command of Lieutenant John Chard and Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead, who led a small garrison of just 140 men against an estimated 7,000 Zulu warriors. The battle at Rorkes Drift took place on the same day that the British suffered their heaviest defeat of the Zulu War at Isandlwana, approximately 20 miles to the north. Despite being vastly outnumbered, the British defenders held out against the relentless Zulu attack, repelling wave after wave of warriors.
