EDITORS COMMENTS
Sarah 'Crazy Sally' Mapp (1737-1821): A Remarkable Bone-Setter of Eighteenth-Century England This evocative image captures Sarah 'Crazy Sally' Mapp, a renowned bone-setter of eighteenth-century England, in the midst of her healing practice. Born in 1737, Sarah Mapp, also known as 'Crazy Sally,' gained notoriety for her extraordinary ability to heal fractures and dislocations through her unique bone-setting techniques. The photograph portrays Sarah in a dimly lit room, surrounded by curious onlookers. Her patient, lying on a makeshift bed, clutches a handkerchief in anticipation of the impending procedure. Sarah, with a focused expression, carefully examines the injured limb and prepares her tools, which include a set of bone-setting forceps and a hammer. Despite her humble origins, Sarah's reputation as a skilled bone-setter spread far and wide. She traveled from town to town, offering her services to those in need, often attracting large crowds due to her unconventional methods. Her ability to heal fractures without the use of anesthetics or surgical intervention was a marvel, and her patients, many of whom were poor and unable to afford medical care, were deeply grateful. Sarah's methods were not without controversy, however. Some accused her of using witchcraft or quackery to heal her patients, while others dismissed her as a fraud. Regardless, her reputation endured, and she continued to practice until her death in 1821. This photograph offers a glimpse into the life of an extraordinary woman who defied the conventions of her time and made a significant impact on the lives of countless individuals. Sarah 'Crazy Sally' Mapp's legacy as a bone-setter serves as a reminder of the power of human resilience and the importance of alternative healing practices in history.
