This historic photograph captures the moment of transition in Iraqi politics as President Abdul Mohammed Arif (1916-1966) arrives for his first press conference after seizing power in a coup on February 8, 1963. Dressed in a formal suit and wearing a serious expression, Arif is flanked by Brigadier Ahmad Hasan Al-Bakr (1914-1982), the newly appointed Prime Minister, who stands to his left. The coup, which overthrew the monarchy and established a republic in Iraq, marked the beginning of a tumultuous period in Iraqi history. Arif, a career military officer, served as the President of Iraq until his tragic death in a helicopter crash in April 1966. The image, taken in Baghdad, provides a glimpse into the political upheaval that characterized the mid-1960s in Iraq and the Middle East as a whole.
