Dressed in a formal suit and wearing a serious expression, Arif is flanked by Brigadier Ahmad Hasan Al-Bakr (1914-1982), the newly appointed Prime Minister, who stands to his left. The coup, which overthrew the monarchy and established a republic in Iraq, marked the beginning of a tumultuous period in Iraqi history. Arif, a career military officer, served as the President of Iraq until his tragic death in a helicopter crash in April 1966.
