This striking studio portrait captures the stern yet resolute visage of General Sir Arthur Edward Aveling Holland (1862-1927), a prominent British army officer who played a significant role in the command and training of troops during the First World War. At the time this photograph was taken, Holland held the esteemed positions of Commandant of the Royal Military Academy Woolwich and Commander Royal Artillery. Born in 1862, Holland joined the army and quickly rose through the ranks, earning several decorations for his bravery and leadership, including the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and the Military Victorian Order (MVO). During the First World War, his expertise and experience proved invaluable, as he oversaw the training and development of countless soldiers at the Royal Military Academy. In addition to his military accomplishments, Holland later entered politics and was elected as a Member of Parliament, further cementing his place in British history.
