EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Felipe II of Spain, also known as Philip II, in the later years of his reign (1598). Felipe II is renowned in history for his piety and unwavering devotion to the Catholic faith. Born on May 21, 1527, in the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain, Felipe was the son of Emperor Charles V and Isabella of Portugal. He ascended to the throne in 1556, following his father's abdication. Felipe II's piety was evident in his rule, as he sought to strengthen the Catholic Church's influence in Spain and its territories. He was also known for his scholarly pursuits and patronage of the arts, attracting the likes of the great painter Titian and the composer Tomás Luis de Victoria to his court. The autograph inscription on the bottom right corner of the print, in Felipe II's own hand, adds an intriguing personal touch to this historical image. The inscription reads, "Felipe, by the grace of God, King of Spain, of the Two Sicilies, of Jerusalem, of Navarre, of Granada, of Toledo, of Valencia, of Galicia, of Vizcaya, of Seville, of Sardinia, of Corsica, of the Indies, of the Canaries, Archduke of Austria, Duke of Burgundy, Count of Flanders, of Habsburg, of Barcelona, of Aragon, of Molina, of Jaen, of Lerida, of Cordoba, of Cerdanya, of Tarragona, of Monzon, of Urgell, of Girona, of Ampurias, of Osona, of Biscay, of Molina, of Salamanca, of Alburquerque, of Belmonte, of Oran, of Nueva Galicia, of the Algarves, of Monterrey in New León, of the Marquesate of Poitou, of the Marquisate of Parma, of the Marquisate of the Molina, of the Marquisate of the Franche-Comté, of the Marquisate of the Val di Taro, and of the Marquisate of the Val di Nizza." This impressive list underscores Felipe II's vast territorial holdings, making him one of the most powerful monarchs in Europe during his time.
