The Duchess, accused of practising magic to help her ambitious husband, Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester, to the English throne, was a woman of treason in the eyes of the law. The allegations against Eleanor were grave. It was whispered that she had consulted with a coven of witches and had concocted potions to influence the outcome of political events. The rumors had reached the ears of King Henry VI, who, with the support of the powerful Duke of York, ordered the Duchess to be tried for treason.
