EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the aftermath of the historic Battle of Rorke's Drift in South Africa, which took place on January 22, 1879. The image shows Lieutenant Chard (left) and Lieutenant Bromhead (right) of the 2/24th Regiment, flanked by their weary and injured men, gathered around a makeshift fire in the early morning hours following the intense Zulu attack. The Battle of Rorke's Drift is renowned for being one of the most heroic actions in British military history, as a small garrison of only 150 British and Native soldiers successfully defended the mission station against an estimated 4,000 Zulu warriors. The fierce engagement lasted for 12 hours, resulting in the loss of 17 British and Native soldiers, while the Zulu army suffered heavy casualties. Despite the victory, the scene depicted in this photograph reveals the harsh realities of the battlefield. The men, many of whom are wounded and bandaged, huddle around the fire to keep warm and recover from their injuries. The exhausted and determined expressions on their faces speak volumes about the intense battle they had just endured. Lieutenant Chard, who had been in command during the battle, and Lieutenant Bromhead, who had led the defense of the hospital, stand proudly among their men. Their leadership and bravery played a crucial role in the successful defense of Rorke's Drift and the survival of the garrison. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the events that unfolded during the Zulu War and the heroism and resilience of the soldiers who fought in it.
