EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print, titled "There Was A Hand-To-Hand Struggle" artist WR Wollen transports us back to the intense battle that took place in 1902. The scene depicts the aftermath of the Battle of Isandlwana, where a courageous group of just 145 British defenders at Rorkes Drift faced off against a much larger Zulu force. As night falls, we witness the harrowing hand-to-hand combat between these two opposing sides. The darkness adds an eerie atmosphere to the image, emphasizing the violence and chaos unfolding before our eyes. Men are locked in mortal combat, wielding swords and spears with deadly intent. Despite being heavily outnumbered, these brave defenders fought valiantly for ten grueling hours until they finally repelled their attackers. Their unwavering determination and heroism earned them great recognition - eleven of them were awarded the prestigious Victoria Cross for their exceptional bravery during this historic engagement. This powerful artwork not only captures a moment in time but also serves as a reminder of the conflicts that shaped South Africa's history during this period. It symbolizes both Britain's imperialist ambitions and resistance from indigenous peoples like the Zulus. Through his masterful engraving technique, WR Wollen brings forth an evocative portrayal of war and its consequences. This print stands as a testament to human resilience amidst adversity while shedding light on significant events from one of Africa's most tumultuous eras.
