EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the renowned German historian and physician, Wolfgang Lazius, born in 1514. Lazius is best known for his significant contributions to the fields of history and medicine during the 16th century. Born in Nuremberg, Lazius initially pursued a career in medicine, studying under the renowned physician, Hieronymus Fracastorius. However, his passion for history soon emerged, and he became an accomplished historian, focusing on the history of ancient Greece and Rome. Lazius' historical works include "De situ et antiquitatibus Asiae," a comprehensive account of the geography and antiquities of Asia, and "Historiae de gestis et rebus in Aegypto, Ethiopia, Nubia et Arabiis gestis," which provides a detailed account of the history of Egypt, Ethiopia, Nubia, and Arabia. Despite his success as a historian, Lazius continued to practice medicine throughout his life. He was a prolific writer, publishing numerous works on medical topics, including "De morbis aetatum," a treatise on the diseases of old age. This portrait of Lazius, likely taken towards the end of his life, captures the wisdom and intellectual curiosity that defined him as a scholar. With a quill in hand and a thoughtful expression on his face, Lazius appears deeply engrossed in his work, a testament to his enduring commitment to both history and medicine. Lazius' legacy continues to inspire scholars and researchers in both fields, and his works remain valuable resources for understanding the historical and medical knowledge of the 16th century. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the interconnectedness of history and medicine and the enduring impact of one man's intellectual pursuits.
