EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the magical moment when Prince Albert, Duke of York, later King George VI (1895-1952), exchanged vows with Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, later Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother (1900-2002), on 26th April 1923. The Duke, who would ascend to the throne in 1936 following the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII, is resplendent in his full military uniform as a Field Marshal in the British Army. His bride, the beautiful and elegant Elizabeth, is radiant in her ivory silk gown and veil, adorned with pearls and diamonds. The wedding took place at Westminster Abbey in London, England, in the presence of their families and the British Royal Court. The newlyweds then embarked on a journey through the streets of London in an open-top carriage, waving to the cheering crowds. Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, who would become known as the "Queen Mother," was the youngest daughter of the 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne. She and the Duke met in 1920 and quickly fell in love. Their marriage was a source of joy and stability for the British monarchy during a time of great change and uncertainty. This photograph is a testament to the love and devotion shared by the Duke and Duchess of York, who would go on to become one of the most beloved and enduring royal couples in British history. Their union produced two daughters, Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret, who would later become Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret, respectively. The photograph is a precious reminder of the history and tradition of the British monarchy and the enduring power of love and commitment.
