1640 1716 Dramatist Lely Meyer Restoration Will I Am Wycherley

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the enigmatic and witty English dramatist, William Wycherley (1640-1716), as depicted by the renowned artists Sir Peter Lely (1618-1680) and Godfrey Kneller (1646-1723). Wycherley, a leading figure of the Restoration period, is best known for his provocative and scandalous plays such as "The Country Wife" and "The Plain Dealer." Born in 1640, Wycherley's early life is shrouded in mystery, but it is believed that he received his education at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He began his literary career as a poet before turning to the stage, and his first play, "The Gentleman of Venice," was produced in 1675. However, it was his next play, "The Country Wife," which premiered in 1675, that truly established Wycherley's reputation as a master of Restoration comedy. The play's bawdy humor and exploration of sexual deception caused a scandal and led to Wycherley being summoned before the Lord Chamberlain's office. Despite the controversy, Wycherley continued to write plays, including "The Plain Dealer" (1676) and "The Painter" (1674), which also met with success. He was also a prolific poet, publishing collections of poems such as "Love's Welcome at the Spring" (1673) and "Love's Pilgrimage" (1675). This portrait, believed to have been painted around the time of Wycherley's greatest successes, captures the dramatist in his prime. The artist, Sir Peter Lely, was a favorite of the Restoration court and was known for his elegant and sophisticated portraits. The portrait was later completed by Godfrey Kneller, who added the inscription "WILLIAM WYCHERLEY" and the date "1716" to the painting. Today, Wycherley's plays remain popular for their wit, humor, and insight into the social mores of the Restoration period. This portrait serves as a fitting tribute to a man who so brilliantly captured the spirit of the age.
