EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Union Workhouse on Race Hill in Brighton, Sussex, as it stood in the early 20th century. The workhouse, which opened in 1867, was a place of last resort for the poor and destitute, providing shelter, food, and basic care in exchange for hard labor. The single-story blocks in the foreground housed the casual wards, where able-bodied paupers were required to work in order to earn their keep. During World War I, the Union Workhouse was transformed into the Kitchener Indian Hospital, named after the then Secretary of State for War, Lord Kitchener. It served as a military convalescent home for Indian soldiers who had been injured in the war. Later, in the 1920s, it became the Brighton General Hospital. The photograph also shows the tramlines running along the roadway, indicating the gradual modernization of the area. The workhouse, however, remained a stark reminder of the poverty and hardship that continued to exist in Brighton and Sussex. This image offers a glimpse into the history of social welfare and healthcare in Brighton, as well as the experiences of the poor and marginalized during the Victorian era and beyond. The Union Workhouse on Race Hill stands as a testament to the complex and often controversial history of providing care for those in need.
