The Michael Faraday Memorial at the Elephant and Castle, London 3
London, England - 2006; This is one of Londons least known monument - the great pioneer scientist of Sir Michael Faraday. This great English scientist made major discoveries in electricity and magnetism, paving the way for technologies which dominate the present day. Appropriately enough, the stainless steel monument houses an electricity sub-station. He would certainly have liked that.
The building in the distance is the Metropolitan Tabernacle, a Reform church dating from 1650. Talk about contrasts in style, intent and architecture... science meets religion, indeed, with science looking to the future, and religion back to the past. Nice

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the lesser-known Michael Faraday Memorial, standing proudly at the Elephant and Castle in London. Sir Michael Faraday, a pioneering scientist, revolutionized the world of electricity and magnetism with his groundbreaking discoveries. The stainless steel monument not only pays homage to this great English physicist but also serves as an electricity sub-station, a fitting tribute to his remarkable contributions. In stark contrast to this modern marvel, we see the Metropolitan Tabernacle in the distance. This Reform church dating back to 1650 represents a fusion of science and religion, where two contrasting worlds collide. While science propels us towards the future, religion often looks back to its historical roots. The photograph captures these opposing forces beautifully - on one side stands Faraday's sleek metallic memorial symbolizing progress and innovation while on the other looms the classical architecture of the church with its pedimented facade and majestic columns. As dusk settles over London's urban landscape, we are reminded of how far humanity has come thanks to scientific advancements like those pioneered by Faraday. Yet amidst all our technological achievements, there is still room for reflection on matters of faith and spirituality. Jon Bower skillfully captures this juxtaposition between science and religion in a single frame - an image that invites contemplation about our place in both realms.
