Abstract visualisation: the dark tunnel into Herculaneum 5
Herculaneum, Italy - 22 October 2014
Located in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town destroyed by a major volcanic eruption in 79 AD. In fact, it was completely buried. This image started off showing the dark and scary tunnel that leads to the now uncovered remains. But then I got adventurous and turned it into something more colorful and abstract, using a combination of Photoshop techniques including multi-layer blending, transformations and gradient mapping. I hope you like it

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Abstract visualisation: the dark tunnel into Herculaneum 5" transports us to the ancient Roman town of Herculaneum, located in the ominous shadow of Mount Vesuvius. The town's tragic fate was sealed when it was completely buried by a catastrophic volcanic eruption in 79 AD. Initially depicting a foreboding and eerie tunnel leading to the uncovered remains, this image takes an artistic twist as it transforms into a vibrant and abstract composition. Through skillful manipulation using various Photoshop techniques such as multi-layer blending, transformations, and gradient mapping, the photographer has breathed new life into this scene. The result is a mesmerizing fusion of colors and shapes that captivate our imagination. Layers upon layers converge with radial symmetry towards a vanishing point, drawing us deeper into the depths of history. As we descend down these steps through this altered reality, we can't help but feel both awe-inspired and slightly unnerved. Jon Bower's creative vision not only showcases his technical prowess but also invites us to contemplate the fragile nature of human existence amidst powerful natural forces. This artwork serves as a reminder of Herculaneum's tragic past while celebrating its enduring legacy through innovative artistry.
