Now an official monument to author Hilaire Belloc, who died in 1953, is Shipley Mill

Now an official monument to author Hilaire Belloc, who died in 1953, is Shipley Mill, which stands in the grounds of Bellocs former Sussex home. The mill has been put into good working order and throughout the summer visitors were able to see it in action in the hands of Peter Powell, whose father was once the Shipley miller. Out-of-season visitors are seen here dwarfed by the great white sweeps of the 60ft high mill.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of history and literary legacy. Shipley Mill, now an official monument to the renowned author Hilaire Belloc, stands proudly in the serene grounds of his former Sussex home. The mill, meticulously restored to its former glory, serves as a testament to Belloc's profound impact on literature. During the summer months, curious visitors had the privilege of witnessing this magnificent structure come alive under Peter Powell's skillful hands. As the son of Shipley's former miller, Powell expertly operated the machinery that once powered this grand 60ft high mill. Its colossal white sails gracefully turned against a backdrop of clear blue skies. In this particular moment frozen in time, out-of-season visitors stand humbly before Shipley Mill. Their presence is dwarfed by its towering presence and majestic sweeps that dominate the landscape. The sheer magnitude of this historic landmark evokes a sense of awe and reverence for both nature's beauty and human ingenuity. Taken on December 30th, 1958 by Topography from TopFoto, this print encapsulates not only Belloc's lasting influence but also pays homage to those who have dedicated themselves to preserving our cultural heritage. It serves as a reminder that even long after an author has departed from this world, their spirit lives on through tangible monuments like Shipley Mill – forever inspiring generations with their words and deeds.
