Fay Taylour, Speedways Queen of the cinders, hopes to return to the saddle. Frank Arnold
Fay Taylour, Speedways Queen of the cinders, hopes to return to the saddle. Frank Arnold, West Hams team manager, has invited her to take part in a trial and the public may later see her give demonstration rides. The ban on women riders still keeps her from competing against men. She was a champion in 1929 but had to retire when the ACU banned women riders. She held the track record at Wembley in 1929, broke the record for a cross-country run in a car from Calcutta to Karachi in 1934; made a 24 hour speedboat record in South Africa in 1939, as well as driving midget cars on tracks in Johannesburg.
Picture shows: Fay gets a few words of encouragement from Jack Cooley (left) and Malcolm Craven. Craig Finn has been nominated as challenger Jack Parker (Bell Vue) for the match race championship.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we see the indomitable Fay Taylour, known as the "Speedways Queen of the cinders" yearning to return to her beloved saddle. Despite being banned from competing against men due to outdated gender restrictions, Fay's determination remains unwavering. West Ham's team manager, Frank Arnold, has extended an invitation for her to participate in a trial, raising hopes that she may once again grace the track with her exceptional skills. Fay's illustrious career saw her achieve great heights before being forced into retirement by the ACU's ban on women riders. In 1929, she became a champion and held the track record at Wembley. Her talents were not confined solely to motorcycles; she shattered records during a cross-country car run from Calcutta to Karachi in 1934 and set a remarkable 24-hour speedboat record in South Africa in 1939. She even fearlessly maneuvered midget cars on tracks in Johannesburg. As Fay prepares for her potential comeback, two figures offer words of encouragement: Jack Cooley and Malcolm Craven stand beside her with support written across their faces. Meanwhile, Craig Finn has been nominated as challenger Jack Parker for an upcoming match race championship. This powerful image captures both Fay Taylour's incredible achievements and the enduring struggle against gender barriers within motorsports during the mid-20th century.
