Post Office Experiments With Golf Jackets And Berets For Staff. New uniforms for men

Post Office Experiments With Golf Jackets And Berets For Staff.
New uniforms for men and women of the Post Office postal staff were shown at the General Post Office Headquarters, King Edward Building, London, EC today. They are designed to be smarter, more economical and healthier than previous types and are to be given 12 months trial by Post Office workers at Exeter and on Euston Station. A new type of material has been chosen to make the uniforms last longer in good condition. Photo shows: The new uniforms at King Edward Building today. The mans uniform consists of serge trousers, a serge blouse of the golf jacket type, and a cap of improved design. The womans uniform, of more modern style and cut than the old, includes a beret instead of the present type of headwear. Modelling the uniforms are Mr. W.R. Edwards of Kingston, Surrey who has been with the GPO 12 years, and Miss Shiela Brady of Richmond, Surrey (four years with the GPO). London, England. 08 February 1952

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this vintage photo print, we catch a glimpse of the Post Office's bold experimentation with new uniforms for their dedicated staff. The General Post Office Headquarters in London served as the backdrop for this unveiling, where both men and women showcased these innovative ensembles. Designed to be smarter, more economical, and healthier than their predecessors, these uniforms were set to undergo a rigorous 12-month trial period by Post Office workers at Exeter and Euston Station. The male uniform featured serge trousers paired with a golf jacket-style blouse, exuding an air of sophistication. Topping off the ensemble was an improved cap design that added a touch of refinement. On the other hand, the female uniform boasted a more modern style and cut compared to its outdated counterpart. Notably different was the replacement of traditional headwear with fashionable berets. To ensure longevity without compromising quality, a new type of material had been carefully selected for these uniforms. This choice aimed to extend their lifespan while maintaining impeccable condition throughout countless workdays. Stepping into the spotlight are Mr. W. R. Edwards from Kingston and Miss Shiela Brady from Richmond—both seasoned members of the GPO family—who graciously modeled these cutting-edge outfits during this momentous occasion in February 1952. This snapshot captures not only fashion innovation but also serves as a testament to progress within one of Britain's most vital institutions—the Post Office.
