Ma Rushworth yields to progress. After 45 years - refuses to retire

" Ma" Rushworth yields to progress. After 45 years - refuses to retire.
After 45 years in business as a newsagent almost under the shadow the Covent Garden Opera House, 73-year-old Mrs Rushworth - " Ma" to every porter in Covent Garden market - is leaving her little shop in Endell Street, off Long Acre. A large part of the street is being torn down to make way for a new building. Mrs Rushworth has spent all her life at the shop and has served such famous people as Caruso, Tettrazini, Zena Dare, and Sir Henry Coward. Even now Mrs Rushworth refuses to leave the trade, and has opened two newsagents shops lower down Endell Street.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we see the indomitable spirit of "Ma". Rushworth as she defies retirement after an impressive 45-year career as a newsagent. Standing proudly at the door of her shop in Endell Street, London, the 73-year-old Mrs Rushworth embodies resilience and dedication. For nearly half a century, her humble store has stood in the shadow of the iconic Covent Garden Opera House, serving countless customers including renowned figures like Caruso, Tettrazini, Zena Dare, and Sir Henry Coward. Now faced with imminent demolition due to progress and urban development plans, Mrs Rushworth remains steadfast in her commitment to her trade. Refusing to let go of what has been her life's work and passion for so long, she bravely opens two new newsagents shops further down Endell Street. Her unwavering determination is truly inspiring. This photograph captures not only a moment frozen in time but also represents an era between the wars when Europe was undergoing significant changes. The monochrome image adds depth and nostalgia to this powerful story. As we gaze upon this remarkable image from June 12th, 1938 - courtesy of TopFoto. co. uk - we are reminded that age should never be a barrier to pursuing our dreams or embracing change. "Ma". Rushworth teaches us that true success lies not just in financial gain but also in finding purpose and fulfillment through one's chosen vocation.
