Ma Rushworth yields to progress. After 45 years - refuses to retire
"Ma" Rushworth yields to progress. After 45 years - refuses to retire.
After 45 years in business as a newsagent almost under the shadow the Covent Garden Opera House, 73-year-old Mrs Rushworth - "Ma" to every porter in Covent Garden market - is leaving her little shop in Endell Street, off Long Acre. A large part of the street is being torn down to make way for a new building. Mrs Rushworth has spent all her life at the shop and has served such famous people as Caruso, Tettrazini, Zena Dare, and Sir Henry Coward. Even now Mrs Rushworth refuses to leave the trade, and has opened two newsagents shops lower down Endell Street.
Photo shows: Mrs Rushworth at the door of her shop in Endell Street.
