The Life of Charles Dickens
The uneducated father in fustian and the educated boy in spectacles.
Dickens on seeing these two characters in Chatham, Kent, thought of Charlie Hexam and his father from Our Mutual Friend. The benevolent old Jew whom he makes the unconscious agent of a rascal, was meant to wipe out a reproach against his Jew in Oliver Twist as bringing dislike upon the religion of the the race he belonged to.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a poignant moment from "The Life of Charles Dickens". The image showcases the stark contrast between an uneducated father, dressed in humble fustian clothing, and his educated son wearing spectacles. Inspired by a scene witnessed by Dickens himself in Chatham, Kent, this composition brings to mind the characters of Charlie Hexam and his father from the renowned novel "Our Mutual Friend". Intriguingly, Dickens intended for the benevolent old Jew depicted here to serve as redemption for a previous portrayal of a Jewish character in "Oliver Twist" that had brought criticism upon his own race. This illustration by Fred Barnard beautifully conveys both social class distinctions and themes of education within Victorian society. As we delve into this snapshot from history, it is important to note that this print is not associated with any commercial use or company. Instead, it serves as a visual reminder of Charles Dickens' profound impact on literature during the 19th century. With its focus on societal divisions and religious undertones, this image invites us to reflect on the complexities inherent in human relationships and prejudices that transcend time. Courtesy of ?TopFoto. co. uk, this evocative photograph transports us back to an era when storytelling was at its peak and reminds us why Charles Dickens remains one of England's most celebrated authors.
