London public house landlords summoned to Buckingham Palace to have licences renewed
London public house landlords summoned to Buckingham Palace to have licences renewed.
Five London public house landlords have received summonses to attend a meeting at Buckingham Palace next week for the renewal of the only five in licences in the country. Controlled by the King. The annual command to attend at the Palace is issued by the Board of the Green Cloth, which supervises the Palace kitchens and domestic arrangements.
All five of the inns, the Silver Cross, the Clarence, the Ship, the Shades and a restaurant in Whitehall Court, were at one time in the Verge of the old Whitehall Palace and their licences are still controlled by the Board of the Green Cloth. The most historic of the aims is the Silver Cross, 33, Whitehall, which was in 1598, the property of Sir William Waad, the son of Armagil Waad, the once famous English Columbus.
Sir Frances Drake is said to have drank there.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage print captures a significant moment in London's history as five public house landlords are summoned to Buckingham Palace for the renewal of their licenses. These privileged individuals have received exclusive summonses to attend a meeting at the Palace, where they will be granted the only five inn licenses in the entire country. The King himself exercises control over these licenses, and their annual renewal is overseen by the Board of the Green Cloth, responsible for supervising Palace kitchens and domestic arrangements. The five establishments involved in this prestigious event are steeped in history. Once located within the Verge of old Whitehall Palace, they still fall under the jurisdiction of the Board of Green Cloth. Among them is Silver Cross, situated at 33 Whitehall since 1598 and once owned by Sir William Waad, son of Armagil Waad - an esteemed figure often referred to as England's Columbus. Legend has it that even Sir Francis Drake frequented this iconic inn. In this image from February 7th, 1938, Mr R Thorpe (right), licensee of Silver Cross proudly displays his summons to Buckingham Palace to his manager Mr EW Piggott. This photograph serves as a testament to both tradition and privilege while offering us a glimpse into London's rich historical tapestry.
