EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative portrait, Thomas Ken (1637-1711), the venerable Bishop of Bath and Wells, is depicted at the age of 73, with a wise and serene expression. The oval print, dated 1711, captures the bishop in his full ecclesiastical regalia, wearing a white surplice and a red cap signifying his high ecclesiastical rank. The intricate details of his attire, along with the elegant folds of his robe, add a sense of grandeur and dignity to the image. Born on March 23, 1637, in Southampton, England, Thomas Ken was a prolific writer of hymns and a dedicated clergyman. He was educated at Winchester College and New College, Oxford, before being ordained as a deacon in 1661 and a priest in 1662. During his early career, he served as a curate in various parishes and became known for his piety and pastoral care. In 1674, Ken was appointed as the Rector of East Knoyle, where he began to write hymns for his congregation. His most famous hymn, "Awake, my soul, and with the sun," was written during this period and is still sung in churches today. In 1685, Ken was appointed as the Bishop of Bath and Wells, a position he held until his death in 1711. Despite facing persecution during the anti-Catholic hysteria of the late 17th century, Ken remained committed to his faith and his ministry. He was known for his charitable works and his efforts to improve the education of the clergy. This portrait, taken towards the end of his long and distinguished career, serves as a testament to his enduring legacy as a writer of hymns and a dedicated bishop.
