This evocative illustration depicts a pivotal moment in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871, as the Prussian army under the command of General von Moltke marches towards the French fortress of Mont Valerien. Located just west of Paris, Mont Valerien was a key strategic position, and its fall would make the capture of the French capital inevitable. The image, dated 1871, shows the Germans entering the fortress, their flags unfurled and their determination etched on their faces. The French soldiers, outnumbered and outgunned, are shown retreating in disarray, their morale shattered. The fortress, once a symbol of French military might, now lies in ruins, its walls breached and its defenses overrun. The capture of Mont Valerien marked a decisive turning point in the war. The Prussian army, having successfully encircled Paris, laid siege to the city, leading to its eventual surrender on January 28, 1871. The Franco-Prussian War had far-reaching consequences, leading to the unification of Germany and the establishment of the German Empire under Kaiser Wilhelm I.
