EDITORS COMMENTS
The Election Campaign in Full Swing: Curious Scenes from the General Election of 1910 As the political landscape of Britain shifted in 1910, the country was once again plunged into a heated election campaign. The top left image captures the intensity of the moment as Liberal politician David Lloyd George climbs over the back wall of the Queen Hall Skating Rink in Peckham to address an overflow meeting. His determination to connect with the people and rally support is evident in his focused expression. In the top right corner, Neil Primrose, the son of former Liberal leader Lord Rosebery, is seen soliciting a labourer's vote. With a hat in hand and a sincere expression, Primrose demonstrates the personal touch that was an essential part of electioneering in this era. The middle right image shows Liberal candidate A.W. Black, who was running for the Biggleswade division, engaging in political discussions from his bed after undergoing an appendicitis operation. Despite his physical limitations, Black's commitment to his campaign was unwavering, and he continued to connect with voters from the comfort of his own home. The bottom image captures a more contentious moment in the campaign, as Unionist candidate Sir William Bull punches a member of the crowd who had repeatedly called him a "lying lawyer." When criticized for his behaviour, Sir William retorted, "I am an Englishman before a gentleman." This scene highlights the passion and sometimes violent nature of election campaigns during this time. These images offer a fascinating glimpse into the past, providing a window into the political landscape of 1910 and the various tactics used by candidates to win the support of the electorate.
