The Defence of Liege
Belgian forces defend the city of Liege from the German advance during the early days of the war. The German plan to neutralise the twelve modern forts that surrounded the city within two days was frustrated by the brave Belgian defence under the command of General Gerard Leman. The assault began on 5th August, and the last forts to surrender did so on 16th August, following the destruction of many of the others by a large German Howitzer. The fall of Liege cleared the path for the German advance through Belgium

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the intensity and determination of the early days of World War I, as Belgian forces valiantly defend the city of Liege against the advancing German army. The twelve modern forts that encircled the city were a formidable obstacle to the German plan for a swift conquest of Belgium. Under the command of General Gerard Leman, the Belgian defenders held out against the German assault for over two weeks, frustrating the enemy's timeline and inflicting significant casualties. The battle for Liege began on August 5, 1870, and the last forts to surrender did so on August 16. The German advance was spearheaded by their formidable artillery, including large Howitzers, which battered the forts relentlessly. The fall of Liege marked a turning point in the war, as it cleared the path for the German army to advance deeper into Belgium. This historical image offers a glimpse into the courage and resilience of the Belgian forces during this pivotal moment in world history. General Leman and his men fought tenaciously against overwhelming odds, delaying the German advance and buying precious time for the Allied forces to prepare for the battles to come. The legacy of their bravery continues to inspire us today, as we reflect on the sacrifices made during the Great War and the enduring power of human determination in the face of adversity.
