Albert I - King of Belgium - Liege - Legion d'Honneur
Albert I - King of Belgium, a panorama of Liege and the French Legion d'Honneur . The German invasion of August 5th, 1914 soon reached Liege, which was defended by 30, 000 troops under General Gerard Leman. The forts initially held off an attacking force of about 100, 000 men but were pulverised into submission by a five-day bombardment by the Germans Big Bertha howitzers. Liege received the Legion d'Honneur for its brave resistance in 1914. Date: circa 1914

The river and citadel at Huy
Sixteen miles south-west of Liege, on the Meuse, stands the picturesque and fortified town of Huy. Here is shown the rock-hewn citadel, and the medieval church which stands on the banks of the Meuse. During World War I, while the bombardment of Liege was proceeding, Uhlans advanced on the bridge at Huys but were beaten back by the civic guard. A few days later a strong force of German cavalry seized not only Huy, but several other points on the west border region. The fall of Huy opened up the railway route from Liege to the Belgian plain. Date: 1914
