EDITORS COMMENTS
The Siege of Zaragoza, also known as the Siege of Saragossa or Zaraguza, was a significant event during the Peninsular War (1808-1814) in Europe. The Spanish town of Zaragoza, located in present-day Aragon, Spain, became the focus of a heroic but ultimately unsuccessful resistance against the invading French army led by Napoleon Bonaparte in the winter of 1809. The siege began in June 1809 when the French army, numbering around 40,000 men, laid siege to the town, which was defended by a Spanish garrison of only 7,000. The Spanish forces, bolstered by civilians and volunteers, put up a fierce resistance, holding out for over three months. The town's fortifications, located on a rocky outcrop above the Ebro River, made it a formidable target for the French. Despite the heroic efforts of the Spanish defenders, the town eventually fell to the French on 21 February 1809. The Spanish lost around 12,000 men in the defense of Zaragoza, while the French suffered losses of around 15,000. The fall of Zaragoza marked a significant victory for the French, allowing them to advance further into Spain and ultimately leading to the capture of Madrid in May 1809. This photo print, from Mary Evans Picture Library, depicts the aftermath of the Siege of Zaragoza. The image shows the ruins of the town, with the French flag flying proudly over the city. The scene is one of destruction and devastation, with the once-proud Spanish town reduced to rubble. The heroic resistance of the Spanish defenders of Zaragoza is a testament to the determination and courage of the Spanish people during the Peninsular War. The Siege of Zaragoza remains an important chapter in the history of the Peninsular War and European military history.
