Saragossa, also known as Zaragoza, is a captivating city in Spain with a rich history and cultural heritage. Located in the Aragon region, it has played a significant role throughout different periods. In the 19th century, Saragossa was depicted on maps as an important city within Spain. Its strategic location made it an essential hub for trade and communication routes. Close to Madrid, the capital of Spain, Saragossa held great importance. One notable event in Saragossa's history is the martyrdom of St Vincent in 304 AD. This tragic incident left a lasting impact on the city's religious identity and devotion to faith. The Virgen of Our Lady of the Pillar holds immense significance for Saragossans. The Basilica dedicated to her stands proudly in Zaragoza, attracting pilgrims from all over Spain who come to pay their respects and seek solace. During the Victorian period, Saragossa experienced growth and modernization like many other European cities. It witnessed architectural developments that shaped its urban landscape into what we see today. The Spanish Civil War brought turmoil to Saragossa when Buenaventura Durruti commanded an anarchist brigade during battle in 1936. His orders were given amidst intense fighting across various Spanish cities including Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga among others. However, this wasn't the first time that Saragossa faced conflict against foreign forces. In 1809 during the Siege by French troops led by Napoleon Bonaparte's army; Agostina rallied her fellow citizens to resist but unfortunately couldn't prevent its capture on February 21st. Artistic depictions have captured moments frozen in time such as "View of Saragozza" painted around 1647 showcasing its picturesque beauty through oil on canvas medium. Today visitors can admire two iconic landmarks - Basilica del Pilar and Seo Cathedral.
