Winged ant, SEM
Winged ant. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an unidentified winged ant (family Formicidae). Only the male and mature female have wings (far right). The male mates with the female on a marriage flight, and then dies. The female bites off her wings and starts a nest. The ant senses movement and taste using a pair of antennae mounted on its head. Its mouthparts (left of head) consist of serrated mandibles that deliver powerful cutting bites. The ant is a social insect that can form colonies of several million. Magnification: x30 at 6x7cm size
