EDITORS COMMENTS
This 1870 woodcut print captures the essence of Voltaire, the renowned French author and poet. In this portrait, we see Voltaire engrossed in his work, reading at a desk with utmost concentration. Born as Francois Marie Arouet, he left an indelible mark on literature and philosophy with his prolific writings. Voltaire's intellectual prowess is evident from his staggering output - more than 20,000 letters and over 2,000 books and pamphlets. Notably, he delved into scientific works as well, including "Elemens de la Philosophie de Newton" a comprehensive guide to Isaac Newton's theories. Beyond science, Voltaire fearlessly tackled various subjects such as history, philosophy, religion, and politics. His unwavering commitment to social justice made him a fierce critic of societal inequalities which resulted in periods of exile and imprisonment throughout his life. Even after his passing in 1778, Voltaire's legacy continued to resonate strongly among the French authorities. Over ten years later in 1791 they paid tribute by ceremonially re-burying him in the prestigious Pantheon located in Paris. This monochrome artwork beautifully encapsulates the spirit of this influential figure who challenged norms through his written words. The illustration portrays not just a man but an embodiment of enlightenment ideals that continue to inspire generations even today.
