Triftgletscher glacier, Switzerland, 2002

Glacial retreat. Image 1 of 2. Terminus of the Triftgletscher glacier, Switzerland, in August 2002. A glacier is a river of ice that flows down from mountain areas. The ice forms from compacted snowfall, and erodes the rock underneath it as it moves forward. The position of the terminal end of the glacier depends on the rate of melting at the terminus, versus the rate of snowfall further up the glacier. The melting forms the glacial lake seen here, which first started to form in 2001. Since 1850, glaciers have been in retreat worldwide. It is thought that global warming has accelerated this trend in recent years. See E235/341 for this glacier in 2003

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Triftgletscher glacier in Switzerland during August 2002, showcasing the alarming phenomenon of glacial retreat. Glaciers are majestic rivers of ice that originate from mountainous regions, formed by compacted snowfall and gradually eroding the underlying rock as they advance. The position of a glacier's terminus is determined by the balance between melting at its end and snowfall higher up. In this image, we witness the terminal point of the Triftgletscher glacier, where it meets a stunning glacial lake that began forming in 2001. Since 1850, glaciers worldwide have been steadily retreating, with recent years witnessing an accelerated trend believed to be linked to global warming. This photograph serves as a powerful testament to climate change's impact on our environment. The frozen landscape depicted here showcases nature's delicate balance and vulnerability in the face of human-induced changes. As temperatures rise due to greenhouse gas emissions and climatic shifts intensify across Europe and beyond, these once-mighty glaciers are receding at an unprecedented rate. Situated in Berner Oberland within the Swiss Alps, this image encapsulates both beauty and concern for our planet's future. It reminds us of our responsibility to protect these natural wonders for generations to come. Science Photo Library has expertly captured this momentous scene through their lens, urging us all to reflect upon our actions and strive towards sustainable practices that can help mitigate further glacial recession caused by climatic warming.
