Steigletscher glacier, Switzerland, 2006

Glacial retreat. Image 2 of 2. Terminus of the Steigletscher glacier, Switzerland, in summer 2006. A glacier is a river of ice that flows down from mountain areas. The ice forms from compacted snowfall, and erodes the rock underneath it as it moves forward. The position of the terminal end of the glacier depends on the rate of melting at the terminus, versus the rate of snowfall further up the glacier. Since 1850, glaciers have been in retreat worldwide. It is thought that global warming has accelerated this trend in recent years. See E235/338 for this glacier in 1994

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the Steigletscher glacier in Switzerland during the summer of 2006, showcasing the alarming phenomenon of glacial retreat. Glaciers are majestic rivers of ice that descend from mountainous regions, formed by compacted snowfall and constantly eroding the rock beneath them as they advance. The position of a glacier's terminal end is determined by the balance between melting at its terminus and snowfall further up the glacier. Unfortunately, since 1850, glaciers worldwide have been steadily retreating. This distressing trend has been exacerbated in recent years due to global warming. The image provides a stark visual representation of this environmental crisis unfolding before our eyes. The icy snout or terminus of the Steigletscher glacier stands as a testament to nature's vulnerability in an era marked by climate change and rising temperatures. As we gaze upon this frozen landscape captured over a decade ago, it serves as a reminder that our actions today will shape tomorrow's world. The photograph encapsulates not only Switzerland's stunning alpine beauty but also highlights humanity's urgent need to address greenhouse gas emissions and protect our fragile planet for future generations.
