Spider gossamer threads at sunrise C017 / 8242
Spider gossamer threads at sunrise. This autumn view shows spider gossamer threads glistening in the early morning light and coating vegetation on a marshy river plain. This is the plain of the River Taw, Devon, UK, which had flooded overnight. As water drained away from the top of the vegetation, hundreds of web spiders (Araneus diadematus) and money spiders (Linyphiidae) produced their silk gossamers. Many money spiders were web ballooning to new locations. Others made silk tents on the vegetation, with a mist or dew condensing on the silk threads. Photographed in October

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Spider Gossamer Threads at Sunrise" captures the enchanting beauty of a marshy river plain in Devon, UK. Taken in October, after a night of flooding from the River Taw, the image showcases an autumn view adorned with delicate spider gossamer threads that sparkle under the early morning light. The vegetation on this water meadow is coated with these ethereal silk strands as they gracefully drape over grasses and plants. Intriguingly, this natural phenomenon has attracted hundreds of web spiders and money spiders to produce their silk gossamers. Some money spiders can be seen web ballooning to new locations while others have created intricate silk tents on the vegetation. The mist or dew condensing on these fine threads adds an element of mystique to the scene. The photograph perfectly encapsulates the serene countryside scenery, with its misty haze and rising sun casting a warm glow over the floodplain. It highlights both the biological marvels and physical geography present in this area, showcasing nature's resilience even after a flood. Dr Keith Wheeler's exquisite capture not only celebrates England's rich biodiversity but also provides us with a glimpse into one of nature's most fascinating creations – spider silk gossamers shimmering like delicate jewels against an autumn backdrop.
