Scales on a butterfly wing, SEM

Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of scales on the wing of a male Morpho butterfly (family: Morphidae) found in Brazil. Here, the tiny overlapping scales that cover the butterfly wing are seen. The male butterfly of Morpho sp. is brightly coloured, in some species an iridescent green or blue. Layers of wing scales are transparent but refract and reflect light of different colours to different extents. This produces a shimmering appearance which is used in the males for sexual attraction. The females are coloured brown. There are about 50 species of Morpho, occurring in South America. Magnification: x90 at 35mm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a butterfly wing up close. Taken using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), the image reveals the mesmerizing scales that adorn the wing of a male Morpho butterfly, belonging to the Morphidae family and found in Brazil. The overlapping scales, barely visible to the naked eye, create a stunning display of colors and patterns. In some species, like this one, males boast an iridescent green or blue hue while females are adorned in brown tones. The transparent layers of these wing scales refract and reflect light at varying degrees, resulting in a shimmering appearance that serves as an essential tool for sexual attraction among males. Morpho butterflies are native to South America and comprise approximately 50 different species. This particular specimen is known as Morpho sp. , showcasing its unique characteristics through this SEM photograph captured by Alfred Pasieka. With a magnification level of x90 at 35mm size, every tiny detail on these delicate wings becomes apparent. This extraordinary snapshot offers us an opportunity to marvel at nature's artistry while providing valuable insights into entomology and zoological studies.
