RMC 136a star cluster, infrared image C014 / 5038

RMC 136a star cluster, infrared image. This young cluster has three bright stars that when formed each weighed more than 150 times the mass of the Sun. The most massive star, known as R136a1 and located at the centre of the image, has a current mass 265 times that of the Sun. It also has the highest luminosity, close to ten million times greater than the Sun. RMC 136a is 22, 000 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Dorado. This image was obtained with the MAD (Multi-Conjugate Adaptive Optics Demonstrator) instrument at the ESOs Very Large Telescope (VLT). Image published in 2010

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the RMC 136a star cluster, a stunning infrared image captured by the MAD instrument at the ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT). Located in the constellation of Dorado and situated 22,000 light years away from Earth, this young cluster boasts three brilliant stars that were born with an extraordinary mass exceeding 150 times that of our Sun. At the heart of this celestial spectacle lies R136a1, the most massive star within the cluster. With a current mass of 265 times that of our Sun and an astonishing luminosity nearly ten million times greater than our own star, it shines as a true cosmic giant. This image offers us a glimpse into its awe-inspiring radiance. The photograph not only captures the beauty and grandeur of these stellar phenomena but also serves as a testament to their significance in astrophysics. It provides valuable insights into stellar evolution and star formation processes occurring within such clusters. Published in 2010, this remarkable image invites us to contemplate the vastness and complexity of our universe while reminding us how far we have come in unraveling its mysteries through advanced telescopic technology like VLT's MAD instrument. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing scene, we are reminded once again of humanity's insatiable curiosity about what lies beyond our planet Earth.
