Riva-rocci sphygmomanometer, circa 1910 C017 / 6936

Mercury sphygmomanometer by Scipione Riva-Rocci with its box, owned by Dr. Herbert French. This sphygmomanometer (invented in 1896) was used to measure blood pressure; the cuff (black) would be placed around the patients upper arm whilst the physician placed their finger on the wrist to feel for the radial pulse. The cuff was inflated using the rubber bulb (black) until the pulse could no longer be felt. The level of the mercury in the vertical glass tube (left) would indicate the pressure in the cuff. The pressure would be released from the cuff slowly and the point at which the radial pulse returned would be read from the level of the mercury and this indicated the systolic blood pressure. This device is English and dates from around

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of medical history - the Riva-Rocci sphygmomanometer, circa 1910. This ingenious device, invented in 1896 by Scipione Riva-Rocci, revolutionized the measurement of blood pressure. The photograph captures the sphygmomanometer along with its accompanying box, which belonged to Dr. Herbert French. The black cuff featured in the image would be securely placed around a patient's upper arm during blood pressure measurements. Simultaneously, the physician would carefully position their finger on the wrist to detect the radial pulse. Using the rubber bulb attached to it, they would inflate the cuff until no pulse could be felt. The vertical glass tube located on the left side of this antique apparatus contains mercury and serves as an indicator for measuring pressure within the cuff. As air is slowly released from it, allowing for circulation to resume and pulses to return at different pressures levels, physicians can accurately determine systolic blood pressure readings based on where exactly mercury settles. With its green background adding a touch of elegance and nostalgia, this English-made sphygmomanometer represents an important milestone in cardiovascular medicine during early 20th century Britain. Its presence reminds us of how far we have come in our understanding and management of blood pressure over time. This print not only pays homage to an essential instrument but also highlights its significance as a testament to human ingenuity and progress in healthcare technology throughout history.
