Platinum sulphide crystal structure

Platinum sulphide crystal, molecular model. Platinum sulphide (PtS) is found in the mineral cooperite, usually with palladium and nickel ions present as well as platinum. Its unit cell (repeating crystal region, outlined in red) has a tetragonal geometry, with a cube of platinum ions (yellow) having the centre of two faces occupied by a sulphur ion (blue). The next cube adjacent to this cube has the alternate faces occupied by the sulphur ion, which is why the unit cell extends past the boundaries of one cube

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and mesmerizing structure of Platinum sulphide crystals. The molecular model beautifully illustrates the arrangement of atoms within this compound found in the mineral cooperite. Alongside platinum, palladium and nickel ions are often present, adding to its complexity. The crystal's unit cell, outlined in red, exhibits a tetragonal geometry that extends beyond the boundaries of one cube. Within this unit cell, a cube formed by yellow platinum ions holds two faces occupied by blue sulphur ions at its center. Adjacent to this cube, another one follows with alternate faces hosting sulphur ions. The image provides an insightful glimpse into the world of ionic chemistry and geology. It highlights how minerals can form intricate crystalline structures governed by precise atomic arrangements. This computer-generated artwork offers a visual representation of these complex interactions on a molecular level. As we delve into the beauty and intricacy of natural compounds like platinum sulfide, we gain a deeper appreciation for their significance in various fields such as geology and chemistry. Science Photo Library continues to capture such remarkable images that bridge artistry with scientific exploration – allowing us to marvel at nature's wonders through their lens.
