Open star cluster M46, 19th century

Open star cluster M46. 19th-century astronomical observation of the open star cluster M46 (NGC 2437). North is at top. Also visible near centre as a nebulosity around one of the stars is the planetary nebula Herschel IV 39 Argus (H IV.39, NGC 2438). M46 is around 5500 light years away, in the constellation of Puppis. This 90-minute exposure was obtained on 24 February 1894, from the observatory in Crowborough, Sussex, UK. This observatory was built and operated by British amateur astronomer Isaac Roberts (1829-1904), one of the pioneers of the new techniques of astrophotography

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century print showcases the mesmerizing beauty of the open star cluster M46, a celestial wonder located approximately 5500 light years away in the constellation of Puppis. Taken on February 24,1894, at the Crowborough Observatory in Sussex, UK by British amateur astronomer Isaac Roberts, this image represents a pioneering moment in astrophotography history. The monochrome photograph reveals intricate details of M46's stellar congregation while also capturing an intriguing nebulosity surrounding one of its stars - the planetary nebula Herschel IV 39 Argus (H IV. 39, NGC 2438). The long exposure technique employed for this image allows us to witness these cosmic wonders with unprecedented clarity and depth. Isaac Roberts was among the early pioneers who revolutionized astronomical observation through photography. His observatory played a crucial role in advancing our understanding of the universe during that era. This historic snapshot stands as a testament to his dedication and passion for unraveling the mysteries of space. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from Science Photo Library's collection, we are transported back to a time when humanity first began harnessing technology to explore and document distant galaxies. It serves as a reminder that even centuries ago, our thirst for knowledge about the cosmos was insatiable and continues to drive us forward today.
