Three monaural stethoscopes, circa 1870 C017 / 6956

Three two-piece monaural stethoscopes made from ivorine and nickel (left), ebony (centre) and gutta percha and rubber (right). The rubber ring on the stethoscope on the right was designed to be used additionally as a percussor. French physician, Rene Theophile Hyacinthe Laennec originally invented the monaural stethoscope in 1816. Their design is essentially a hollow metal cylinder, the bell shaped end is placed on the patients body and the flat end, to the physicians ear. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases three monaural stethoscopes, each with its own unique material composition and purpose. Dating back to 1870 in England, these antique diagnostic devices were crucial for physicians to listen to internal sounds of the body through a process called auscultation. The stethoscope on the left is made from ivorine and nickel, while the one in the center is crafted from elegant ebony. The third stethoscope on the right stands out with its gutta percha and rubber construction. Interestingly, this particular model features a rubber ring that doubles as a percussor, allowing for additional examination techniques. French physician Rene Theophile Hyacinthe Laennec invented the monaural stethoscope in 1816. Its design consists of a hollow metal cylinder with a bell-shaped end placed against the patient's body and a flat end directed towards the physician's ear. These historical artifacts not only represent advancements in medical technology but also serve as reminders of how far healthcare has come since their creation. With their red background adding an air of nostalgia, these nineteenth-century instruments symbolize an era when cardiovascular diagnoses relied heavily on careful listening and observation. Science Photo Library presents this remarkable image capturing both history and innovation within medicine—monaural stethoscopes that have stood the test of time as iconic symbols of diagnostic excellence.
