Life-cycle of the Sun, artwork
Life-cycle of the Sun, computer artwork. Our Sun was created approximately 4.6 million years ago from the gravitational collapse of giant molecular cloud (GMC, left). As the GMC collapsed it released heat and eventually the Sun became hot enough to begin nuclear fusion of hydrogen. So far the Sun has used 37 per cent of this fuel and won t run out of hydrogen for another 5 billion years. When all the hydrogen is used nuclear reactions involving helium will begin. At this point the Sun will enlarge and become a red giant, engulfing the inner solar system. When all the fuel is used the Sun will collapse and become a white dwarf (upper right)

EDITORS COMMENTS
This computer artwork titled "Life-cycle of the Sun" takes us on a mesmerizing journey through the evolution and eventual demise of our beloved star. The image showcases the intricate stages that have shaped our Sun over its 4.6 million years of existence. Starting from the left, we witness the birth of our Sun as it emerges from a colossal gravitational collapse within a giant molecular cloud (GMC). As this process unfolds, immense heat is released, leading to nuclear fusion and igniting hydrogen within its core. Remarkably, only 37 percent of this fuel has been consumed thus far, ensuring that our Sun will continue to shine for another staggering 5 billion years. As time progresses, however, new transformations await. Once all hydrogen reserves are depleted, helium reactions will commence and trigger an expansion in size. The Sun will then evolve into a red giant star, expanding so dramatically that it engulfs everything in its path within the inner solar system. Eventually reaching its final stage, our dying star will undergo collapse and transform into a white dwarf (upper right). This ethereal celestial body represents both an end and beginning—a remnant of what once was while holding secrets about cosmic origins. Through this awe-inspiring illustration by Science Photo Library, we gain insight into stellar evolution—unveiling not just the life cycle but also highlighting humanity's place amidst vast astronomical wonders.
