EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork, titled "Lateral Trunk Muscles" offers a remarkable glimpse into the intricate anatomy of the human body. Created in 1831 by French physician and anatomist Jean-Baptiste Marc Bourgery, this illustration is part of an eight-volume atlas called Traite complet de l'anatomie de l'homme. In this particular print, we are presented with a side view (front of the body at right) showcasing the third layer of lateral muscles found in the trunk. The serratus, transverse abdominal, and external intercostals (rib muscles) take center stage, revealing their detailed structure and positioning within our bodies. Nicolas-Henri Jacob's skillful hand brought these muscles to life on plate 66 of volume 2. His meticulous attention to detail allows us to appreciate not only their physical appearance but also their vital role in supporting our posture and facilitating movement. As we delve into this historical piece from the early 19th century, it serves as a reminder that medical knowledge has evolved significantly over time. Yet even today, understanding these lateral trunk muscles remains crucial for physicians and researchers alike as they continue to explore human anatomy for both diagnostic purposes and advancements in medicine. This extraordinary artwork provides us with a window into our own bodies' complexity while honoring the pioneering work of Bourgery and Jacob in unraveling its mysteries.
