Although he never built a working rocket, Tsiolkovskys work was highly influential in the development of Soviet rocket and space technology. He determined that the Earths escape velocity was 8 kilometres per second and showed that this could be achieved using liquid-fuel rockets. Along with Hermann Oberth and Robert H. Goddard, he is considered one of the founding fathers of rocketry and astronautics. Photographed in 1934, in Russia
