John Gladstone (1827-1902). 19th Century artwork by Leslie Ward ( Spy ) of the British chemist John Hall Gladstone. Gladstone was President of the Physical Society from 1874 to 1876, and the Chemical Society from 1877-1879. He is best known for his publication on bromination of rubber, and also pioneered work in optics and spectroscopy. This image was originally published in Vanity Fair magazine, in 1891
