James Glaisher FRS, Meteorologist
James Glaisher (1808-1903), English meteorologist, born in London and largely self-educated, he became assistant to the Director of the Cambridge University Observatory. In 1835 he joined the Greenwich Observatory, becoming the Superintendent of the Magnetic and Meteorological Department in 1840. His research produced standard tables for the calculation of dewpoints of the air. He established about 40 observing stations equipped with barometrical, hygrometrical and temperature instrumentation from which he published reports for 54 years. He was a founder member of the Meteorological Society and was elected to the Royal Society in 1849. He is famous for his research into temperatures, dewpoints and winds at altitude, for which he made 29 ascents between 1862 and 1866, reaching a maximum height of 39, 000 feet. He was assisted by Henry Coxwell, the English aeronaut

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases James Glaisher, an esteemed English meteorologist and scientist. Born in London in 1808, Glaisher was largely self-educated but went on to become the assistant to the Director of the Cambridge University Observatory. In 1835, he joined the renowned Greenwich Observatory and eventually became the Superintendent of the Magnetic and Meteorological Department in 1840. Glaisher's groundbreaking research focused on temperatures, dewpoints, and winds at high altitudes. To gather data for his studies, he embarked on a series of daring ascents between 1862 and 1866 using balloons. With Henry Coxwell as his trusted companion and skilled aeronaut, Glaisher reached incredible heights of up to 39,000 feet during these expeditions. Throughout his career spanning over five decades, Glaisher established around 40 observing stations equipped with state-of-the-art barometrical, hygrometrical, and temperature instruments. His meticulous observations were published in reports that contributed significantly to our understanding of weather patterns. As a founder member of the Meteorological Society and an elected fellow of the Royal Society since 1849, James Glaisher left an indelible mark on scientific history. His pioneering work not only advanced meteorology but also produced standard tables for calculating air dewpoints. This remarkable print from Science Photo Library pays homage to James Glaisher's unwavering dedication to unraveling nature's mysteries through scientific exploration.
