1870 Fuegians by the Reverend J. G. Wood
Woodcut by Zwecker in the Rev. J.G.Woods Natural History of Man 1870. These unflattering portraits are clearly designed to accentuate the perceived primitive nature of the Fuegians. They are based in large degree on the descriptions of Captain Parker King in the first volume of " The Surveying Voyages of HMS Adventure and Beagle" (1839), but also on some accounts by Captain Fitzroy of the Beagle and Captain William Parker Snow who was master of the schooner Allen Gardiner on the Patagonian Missionary Societies 1854 expeditions

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "1870 Fuegians" showcases an intriguing woodcut by Zwecker in the Reverend J. G. Wood's renowned publication, "Natural History of Man". The artist's intention is unmistakable - to emphasize the perceived primitive nature of the Fuegians through unflattering portraits. Drawing heavily from Captain Parker King's vivid descriptions in "The Surveying Voyages of HMS Adventure and Beagle" (1839), as well as accounts by Captain Fitzroy and Captain William Parker Snow, this artwork offers a glimpse into the lives of these indigenous people. With its savage and tribal undertones, this illustration sheds light on the cultural heritage and ancestry of the Fuegian tribe residing in Tierra del Fuego, South America. It serves as a visual testament to their unique existence amidst a rapidly changing world during that era. Notably associated with Darwinian anthropology, this thought-provoking piece invites contemplation on human evolution and our shared history. Beyond its artistic value lies a deeper narrative about missionary efforts undertaken by societies like Patagonian Missionary Societies' 1854 expeditions. Paul D. Stewart masterfully captures the essence of these ancestral figures through his lens, allowing us to reflect upon their place within our collective consciousness. This print stands as a reminder that every person has a story worth exploring - one that transcends stereotypes or preconceived notions.
